Registration is now open for the Spring 2023 Museum Studies Annual Lecture featuring Bonita Bennett, former award-winning Director of the District Six Museum in Cape Town, South Africa. May 1st from 12:30 to 1:30 pm. Register HERE. This is a virtual event and the zoom link will be sent to you after your successful registration.
Dr. Bennett will discuss her own career path from anti-apartheid activism to education and museums and heritage more broadly, and address how museums can be vehicles for justice by empowering and amplifying the right to remember. This was a large part of Dr. Bennett’s work at the District Six Museum, which commemorates the forced removal of populations under apartheid in South Africa (especially in District Six but also elsewhere) and supports translating the memories of removal experiences into land claims and other reparative and restitutive efforts. “And who would have thought a museum could be that place!” a former resident once told Dr. Bennett. Join us to learn more about how such approaches apply across and beyond museums!
