Biography:

Jennifer Van Horn specializes in the visual and material culture of the early United States.  She teaches courses on eighteenth and nineteenth-century decorative arts, material culture theory and methodology, the production of historical memory and archival practices. She is the author of The Power of Objects in Eighteenth-Century British America (2017) and Portraits of Resistance: Activating Art During Slavery (2022). A graduate of the Winterthur Program at the University of Delaware and the University of Virginia, Professor Van Horn previously worked as an assistant curator at George Washington’s Mount Vernon and taught at George Mason University and with the Smithsonian M.A. Program in the History of Decorative Arts.
